The criminal Solicitors in the firm are the senior partner Simon Brown and Associate Mr Colin McLaughlin.
Simon Brown has been practising criminal law since 1997 and qualified as a Solicitor Advocate in 2006. This means that the firm can now deal personally with any criminal case from the Justice of the Peace Court to the High Court ensuring a continuity of representation and advice throughout. Also in 2009 Mr Brown was appointed as a Criminal Peer Reviewer by the Scottish Legal Aid Board to monitor standards in other solicitors’ work. An ex Dean of Kilmarnock Faculty of Solicitors, he is also the Law Society representative for the local area, and sits on the board of the Law Society.
Colin McLaughlin has a wealth of criminal experience in the local area having practised criminal law since 1999 in Ayr and Kilmarnock. Colin joined Matthew Brown Solicitors in June 2008. His experience again is exclusively in the field of criminal law, with a particular specialisation in Sheriff and Jury work.
The civil solicitors in the firm are Carol McCluskey and Karen Wotherspoon, who work closely with former partner, Tracey Brown, acting as Consultant and Elaine Weaver, Accredited Paralegal.
Carol McCluskey is an associate in the firm. She has worked with the firm since 2005 as both a trainee and qualified solicitor. Carol deals with all aspects of Family Law, Children’s hearing work including referrals to the Sheriff Court and appeals from decisions of the children’s panel and also with accident claims.
Karen Wotherspoon joined Matthew Brown as a Solicitor in June 2017. Whilst she has worked primarily in residential conveyancing, she also has experience in debt recovery dealing with both secured and unsecured debts. Karen also undertakes work in other areas of law, including Family Law.
Tracey Brown is a Consultant of the Firm having retired as a Partner in 2016 following an 18 year association with the firm. She continues to have an input as a Consultant and provides knowledge and insight based on her years of experience in Family Law matters, Conveyancing, Executries, Adults with Incapacity and Accident Claims. She continues to act as an independent Solicitor in the preparation of Bar Reports for the Family Court at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court and also continues to tutor in Family Law on the Diploma and Legal Practice at the University of Glasgow.
Elaine Weaver, is a Law Society of Scotland Accredited Paralegal. She is also qualified and registered with the Society of Law Accountants in Scotland in respect of Cashroom Accounting, Executries and Feeing. She has worked with the firm since 1990 and deals with Conveyancing, Wills, Executries and Adults with Incapacity matters.
